Weekend in Cracow

Details:

    1° day ARRIVAL

Arrival in Cracow, meeting with a tour leader, transfer from the airport to the hotel in Cracow, check-in, dinner.

2° day OLD TOWN - WAWEL HILL

All-day-stay in Cracow. Our visit in the city will begin in the Matejko Square, where we will learn the history of Kleparz and see a very important monument of Battle of Grunwald. The Square is the starting point of Via Regia, the way that the kings of Poland used to get to the Wawel Castle and which we walk this day.

The next attraction is the Barbakan, a fortified outpost once connected to the city walls. It is one of the few remaining relics of the complex network of fortifications and defensive barriers that once encircled the royal city. In the old times Barbakan was connected with Floriańska Gate, which we use to enter the Old Town.

The Via Regia leads us to the Main Square, one of the biggest city markets in Europe. Here we can admire Sukiennice (medieval shopping gallery), the Town Hall Tower and St. Mary's Church – the most famous monuments in Cracow. We visit the church, where the valuable Gothic Altarpiece by Veit Stoss is located. We also go to the small Mariacki Square to hear the traditional Hejnał and wave to the Hejnalista.

After that we continue on Via Regia and learn about places and monuments connected to famous people from all over the world, such as Wierzynek Restaurant, Franciszkańska Street, where the Pope John Paul II met with young people, St. Peter and Paul Church and many others.

At the end of Via Regia we reach the Wawel Hill. It is a place of great significance to the Polish people. We visit the Cathedral and Royal Castle.

    A break for a dinner.

In the afternoon we go to Kazimierz. It is a Cracow quarter composed of two parts: Christian and Jewish. We start in the Christian part from a place called Skałka, which means "a small rock" in Polish, it is a small outcrop where the Bishop saint Stanislaus was slain by order of king Bolesław II the Bold in 1079. This action resulted in the king's exile and the eventual canonization of the slain bishop.

Then we head to the Wolnica Square, which was the market of medieval Kazimierz, back when the quarter was a separate city. We can notice similarities to the Main Square because the cities were like twins.

In the evening we visit the Jewish quarter. We walk down old, tight and narrow streets to see monuments connected to Jewish people, who lived here for a long time. We learn about their history and see places where they prayed and spent time such as synagogues, cemetery, Szeroka Street. We also go to New Square to taste a famous dainty – quiches.

Free time, transfer to the hotel, overnight.

3° day AUCHWITZ - WIELICZKA SALT MINE

This day we see two monuments included on the UNESCO list.

After a breakfast we go to Oświęcim to visit Auschwitz concentration camp built and operated by the Third Reich in Polish areas annexed by Nazi Germany during World War II.

    Break for a dinner.

Then we go to Wieliczka to visit the oldest salt mine in the Europe. The mine's attractions include dozens of statues and four chapels that have been carved out of the rock salt by the miners. The oldest sculptures are augmented by the new carvings by contemporary artists.

    Return to the hotel.
